Mount Rinjani, located on the island of Lombok, Indonesia, is one of the most famous and highest volcanoes in Indonesia. With an elevation of 3,726 meters, its summit offers spectacular views of the Segara Anak crater lake, vast grasslands, and breathtaking natural scenery. For trekkers with limited time, the one-day trekking package on Rinjani is an appealing and challenging option.
Preparation Before Trekking
Before embarking on the trek, there are several essential preparations to make:
- Physical Condition: Ensure you are in good physical condition, as this trek is quite demanding. Cardiovascular exercises such as jogging or cycling can help prepare your body.
- Equipment: Bring adequate trekking gear, such as comfortable hiking boots, warm clothing, windproof and waterproof jackets, a flashlight or headlamp, and sufficient snacks and drinking water.
- Guide: Hiring a local guide is highly recommended. They not only know the best routes but can also provide valuable information about weather conditions and terrain.
- Permits: Obtain the necessary permits for trekking in Mount Rinjani National Park. These can usually be arranged through your guide or tour operator.
- Weather Check: Check the weather forecast before your trek. The best time to trek Mount Rinjani is during the dry season, from April to November.
One-Day Trekking Route
The one-day trek on Mount Rinjani usually starts from Senaru Village. Here is a detailed route breakdown:
- Senaru Village to Jebak Gawah (RTC) and then to Pos 1: The trek begins from the Jebak Gawah entrance at an elevation of around 750 meters above sea level. We will use transportation such as motorbikes or pickup from the accommodation to Jebak Gawah. The journey from the Senaru traditional house to Jebak Gawah is filled with views of the residents’ gardens which are still beautiful. Along the road you will see coffee plantations with a distinctive floral aroma in certain seasons. The initial trail goes through a tropical forest with lush scenery and soothing natural sounds. This section (Jebak Gawah to Pos ) is relatively moderate, taking approximately 1-1.5 hours.
- Pos 1 to Pos 2: After reaching Pos 1, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. The path is rocky and can be slippery, especially after rain. This segment takes about 1.5-2 hours and requires careful footing.
- Pos 2 to Pos 3: Continuing to Pos 3, the terrain becomes increasingly difficult with steeper inclines. This part of the trek takes around 2 hours. The forest canopy begins to thin out, providing glimpses of the expansive views awaiting you.
- Pos 3 to Senaru Crater Rim: The final leg from Pos 3 to the Senaru Crater Rim is the most strenuous. The trail is steep and requires significant effort, but the reward at the top is worth it. It takes about 1.5-2 hours to reach the rim. At the rim, you will be at an elevation of approximately 2,641 meters.
Scenery and Experience
Upon reaching the Senaru Crater Rim, you will be greeted with stunning views of the Segara Anak crater lake, the small volcano within the crater called Mount Baru Jari, and the expansive panorama of Lombok Island. This is the perfect moment to rest, take photos, and enjoy the extraordinary natural beauty. You may also witness the clouds rolling in beneath you, adding to the surreal experience.
Returning to Senaru Village
After enjoying the views at the summit, the trek continues with the descent back to Senaru Village. The descent is usually quicker but requires caution due to the steep and sometimes slippery path. The total time required for the descent is typically around 3-4 hours. Be mindful of your pace to avoid injuries.
