Sembalun Trek Route

Sembalun Trek route

The Sembalun route is one of the most popular trails for trekking Mount Rinjani in Indonesia. Starting at an altitude of 1,100 meters, this route offers open landscapes with rolling hills and breathtaking scenery, making the initial phase of the trek relatively enjoyable. Unlike the dense tropical rainforest of the Senaru route, the Sembalun trail provides wide, unobstructed views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, allowing trekkers to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the area.

As the trek progresses, the climb gradually becomes more challenging, especially from POS 2 to POS 3. The terrain consists of a mix of grassy slopes and rocky paths, requiring steady endurance. However, the open environment allows for better airflow, making the hike more comfortable despite the increasing elevation. Trekkers should stay hydrated to prevent altitude sickness, which can set in unexpectedly as they gain height.

Sembalun Crater Rim

The final ascent to the Sembalun Crater Rim is the most demanding part of the trek, with steep inclines and loose volcanic sand. However, reaching the crater rim at around 2,639 meters is a rewarding experience. Offering stunning panoramic views of Segara Anak Lake and the towering summit of Mount Rinjani. Many trekkers choose to camp here before attempting the summit the next morning, making the Sembalun route a scenic yet challenging adventure

What you will meet and see in Sembalun trek route! Starting in the morning from the Rinjani Trek Centre in the village. The climb to Plawangan II at 2,638 m will take about 8 hour. Passing through POS I (1,300 m), POS II (1,500 m) and POS III (1,800 m).

Savana View of Sembalun Trek Route

With a starting altitude of 1,100 meters, there are no humid conditions to contend with. The first half (or more) of the trek is literally a breeze. The trek through savanna grassland is windy and easygoing, with gentle ups and downs. And the only obstacles to look out for are the ‘cow pats’, deposited by the villagers’ cows along the way.

The rolling hills and stunning scenery help reduce fatigue. Taking the Senaru route is a different experience, as it is enclosed by a tropical rainforest. From POS 2 to POS 3, the climb on the Sembalun route remains manageable.

The challenge for Sembalun route is from POS 3 to POS Extra. As the uphill gradient can be 50 degrees at times. Young children will find this section challenging as some steps are set quite far apart.

Cooler weather up here may give the impression that the body does not need fluids. But be sure to drink more to prevent altitude sickness from setting in strangely. There is a guy selling cold drinks here at the campsite at exorbitant prices for those who crave it.

Overnight at the campsite here and go for the summit starting at 3 AM the next day. You need to be well rested as this is a stiff task. The final climb is nearly 1,100 m on difficult ground.
